Developed to a US Navy specification for anti-submarine helicopter and first flown 8 March 1954. Also built under license by Sud-Aviation in France, and by Westland in the UK as the Wessex. First commercial deliveries made in 1956. First flight of turbine-powered conversion 19 August 1970. Total built (including military); 1,821.
